Warm chocolate cake

I had this dessert a few months ago at Menangle House… jealous much?

A word of warning. Polishing off a 200g bag of Doritos before heading out for dinner was probably not the wisest idea we’ve ever had, and is probably the reason why this meal also supplied us with some leftovers.

In the Mood for Thai is located next to one of our favourite pubs, the White Horse on Crown St in Surry Hills. We’ve walked past it plenty of times and always wanted to try it but never seemed to get around to it.

Well let’s be honest, the only reason we wanted to try it was the funky decor including awesome looking hanging chairs:

We went on a Thursday and it was fairly quiet. We did go reasonably early and it was starting to get busier by the time we left. We ordered four curry puffs for an entrée which were somewhat disappointing. A little dry… We didn’t bother to take a photo. I’m sure you know what a curry puff looks like. These were no different.

For mains we ordered a yellow chicken curry:

Finally dev had an epiphany and raised the stakes by ordering duck pad see ew:

This choice was a stroke of genius. As J explained, in a pad see ew the noodles are fried. What makes duck taste really good? Frying it. What makes fried duck extra good? Dark soy sauce. This dish was amazing.

The other dishes? The yellow curry met expectations. It was a curry, it was yellow. The king prawns, despite being beautifully presented, didn’t live up to expectations. The prawns were over cooked and didn’t have much flavour.

The service was attentive but occasionally ineffective. A coke ordered at the start of the meal was forgotten (thankfully it didn’t appear on the bill) and we needed a couple of tries to get all our leftovers packed in containers for us.

Ultimately, we decided that if we were that close to the White Horse again, we would eat at the White Horse (stay tuned for a review of their $15 pasta and wine deal). While there was nothing particularly wrong with the food, with prices as high as $30 a main it wasn’t the best value.

Final verdict:

Curry Puffs: Underwhelming

Yellow Curry: Sufficiently whelmed

King Prawns: Underwhelming

Duck Pad See Ew: Overwhelmed. This dish will be raved about to most of our friends.
